Balika Utsavs¹ are now regularly organised under the Pehchan programme. They can best be described as a happy occasion where all the girls from Pehchanshalas get together. They exhibit the work that they have done over the year and put on a cultural event. It has now assumed the character of an annual community activity of sorts. The community and the panchayat feel a sense of ownership towards it. This year, one farmer harvested his crop a little early so that his field could be used for the event. Rupees 3500 were collected towards expenses and pamphlets (flyers) were printed to publicise the event. Many people provided transportation to community members and neighbours so that they could come to the Balika Utsav.
