This is an important component of the Pehchan programme. We see the improvement in the situation of government schools as a step towards large scale and sustainable changes in the education system. It therefore becomes extremely important to work with government schools. It was with this objective that Digantar worked with government schools. Our work with government schools was carried out in 4 distinct stages in a logical sequence. The stages were:

• Understanding government schools – before beginning work with them.
• Working directly with children in classrooms – to demonstrate to the teachers our idea as well as to communicate the fact that it is do-able and that results are tangible.
• Working with teachers – to help them plan academic work for the coming week and review the past week’s academic plan.
• Academic support to schools – regular weekly contact with schools and teachers as well as biannual workshops with them.
