Shiksha Samarthan (2006-2011)

Digantar has been working in the field of elementary education and is involved in all its aspects: from running of schools, research, theory building, developing curricular and teaching learning material, teacher training etc. The ‘Pehchan’ project on a small scale proved that it is possible to bring about significant positive change in government schools. With the ‘Pehchan’ project ending in June 2006, the ‘Shiksha Samarthan’ project was initiated in 75 schools of Phagi block in July 2006 with the support from WATIS, the aim of the project being to transform the government schools, in 5 years, into institutions that provide quality education. The project aim to enhance the capacities of the teachers such that they work with improved methods in the classrooms. The teachers also need to feel confident that the improved pedagogy that the project suggests is ‘do-able’, and without extra effort on their part, and that they can evolve their own ways of improving upon it. The project also aimed to work with the academic support structures at the cluster level in two clusters, to strengthen them, in order to make the intervention sustainable. It was expected that the community gets actively involved with the school to achieve good education for their children by participating in critical decisions of school management.
